this disturbs me.
i used to pass this building each time we took a cab back from manhattan to our apartment in bed-stuy. i didn't even pay it much attention. the surrounding neighborhood is definitely being worked on (read: gentrified), as is all of brooklyn (but that's another story, another post). but i can't imagine shopping at home depot or grabbing a coffee from starbucks or having a meal while someone above me is locked up, trying to barter with his cellie for toilet paper or a can of soup. can you imagine them building a residential space? condos on top of the jail? that is insanity. i don't even have the words to describe how disgusted this makes me feel.

clearly, something about this ain't right
It's reflective of how desensitized our society is to the plight of the poor and disenfranchised. They're fine with it as long as they can't see it or smell it. They are content with peering from outside of the prison walls. It's their side show. They'll probably have retail sells and have slogans like, "these prices are locked in!" or "It's a steal of a deal!" I'm telling you...America is sick.
HS: yes, there is something not right about the whole system. it does not value those it "protects."
SBess:true, true, and true. our society has turned a blind eye to those things which are not visible. the only reason it's causing such an uproar is because it's in gentrified bklyn. and if those slogans show up, there better be a protest right behind them.
The comedy is that I lived across the street from that building until last August. LOL.
There is so much construction going on in this neighborhood.
Directly next to my old apartment a 20 story mixed use (condo, retail) jawn is going up.
Around the corner there are some BEAUTIFUL, I can't front, 3 MILLION dollar newly constructed concrete brownstones on state street.
Um. When it comes to property development. Very little surprises me.
Ethically, I wonder who is going to be willing to have their store there.
I think that's a really disturbing thought...
It's like they're implying it's no big deal or viewing it as something natural... It's pretty alarming!

MM: they are building up EVERYTHING. now that they tore down that building for the Net's stadium, bklyn is about to get crazy expensive (as if it wasn't already). bed-stuy is already a "hot" place to live, when east new york starts to come up, watch out *lol*
