Every Child Is A Poet

Posted by the prisoner's wife On 6:19 AM

last night we had open house at our school. typically open house is a time when teachers display all of the creative/excellent projects students have completed throughout the semester. in honor of open house & in honor of National Poetry Month, my students created poetry collages. before open house began i hung them all outside of my classroom under the heading, "Every Child Is A Poet," which is the title of the Piri Thomas documentary.

because I am sharing poems this month, i'm going to share a few of my students' work. i hope you enjoy them as much as i did.

ps--for all images, click on them for a lager view.

Do you have any idea how you are shaping their minds? Sister you are amazing. We NEED more like you to shape and change this world. JFK & Nikki Giovanni were right...like a ripple on a pond. You will be the one they remember for always and forever.

    Beautiful!

Xtina: thank you! i am so happy with how the wall turned out. a lot of kids came by today and were reading it. of course all my students were like..."Mssssssss! where is MY poster?!" and then they got all excited when they saw it up. it was really cute.

Lovebabz: thank you, sis. sometimes it's really hard to see if you're making an impact. i hope that they walk away with lots of things they've learned this year. i try to talk about more than just English, so hopefully something sticks.

    Hey TPW,

Every birthday needs a poem! I am celebrating my birthday May 2 and I am asking all my favorite bloggers to pen a poem, or prose or a love missive for me. I will post them on my birthday and all during the month of May. It my intention to bind them into a book.

    Do say yes! Lovebabz@gmail.com
